JoinTheLeaders @ CIBC Run For The Cure

As much as it is important to get inspirations from the current leaders in our community, it is also crucial that young professionals to take initiatives in getting involved in our community and become role models themselves. We started the ‘Lead by Examples’ project to help the young professionals to get more involved in our community events. In this project, we take initiatives in getting involved in our community events to raise awareness about various issues and promote the importance of giving back to our community.

This project is still in its developmental stage. We aim to participate in more events in the future and also invite other young professionals in our community to join us. Through this project, we hope to provide them with opportunities to get involved in our community and help them to become true leaders.

Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure

The first event that we participated in was the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. This is Canada’s largest single day, volunteer-led fundraising event dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research, and education and awareness programs. Three members (Stella Chun, Sierra Lee, Alice Kim) from the West Chapter participated in the event on Sunday, October 3, 2010 and ran 5km with thousands of other participants. We shared with other members how rewarding our experience was during our national SKYPE meeting and encouraged them to participate and/or volunteer in such events in the future.

Testimonial

“On Sunday morning, October 3rd, 2010, three west chapter members participated in 19th annual Canadian Breast Cancer foundation CIBC Run for the Cure and successfully finished a five-kilometre walk to raise awareness and funds for the breast cancer research. Before the start, everybody was asked to write down the name on the “I’m running for _______ ” paper and put it on the chest in order to remember their special ones while walking. During the event, downtown Vancouver was filled with “Waves of pink” by thousands of breast cancer survivors and supporters who were walking for the same goal; to create a future without a breast cancer. It was a special Sunday morning with full of emotion, and I hope everyone marks calendar for the next year’s Run for the Cure on Sunday, October 2nd, 2011.”Sierra Lee from JoinTheLeaders West Chapter
